“YS" has two origins.
The first “YS” comes from an abbreviation of our company name "YAMAICHI SPECIAL STEEL”.
“SPECIAL STEEL” means special “HAGANE” in Japanese.
The second “YS” comes from an abbreviation of "YASUKI SPECIAL STEEL=YASUKI HAGANE".
“YASUKI HAGANE" is a brand name of high-grade special steel made in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, which is known for blades stainless steel. Yamaichi Special Steel has long been an official distributor of this brand.
“TAMA HAGANE”, the material used for Japanese swords, is still produced in Okuizumo region, Shimane Prefecture, using a manufacturing method called “TATARA” which has a history of more than one thousand years, with the cooperation of Yasugi factory of Proterial, Ltd. and others.
Japanese swords made from “TAMA HAGANE” are characterised as "unbreakable, unbendable, and great sharpness" and this spirit of the steel making is the root of YASUKI HAGANE.
It was inevitable that Yamaichi Special Steel, who encountered skating blades that had continued to have issues such as "breakage, bends, and frequent sharpening" in the modern figure skating world where advanced jumps have become the mainstream, were inspired by Japanese swords.
Yamaichi Special Steel has been trading YASUKI HAGANE for more than a half century and that is the very reason why we are able to produce steel blades that are "unbreakable, unbendable, and durable" with the utmost attention to quality.
